Huge Performances And Results From Greencastle And Kildress!
When the league season comes to a close later in the year and the relegation issues in the top division are sorted, teams might well look back on the results from this weekend and the impact they had on the outcome. There can be little doubt that the two most inspiring results from Saturday were the wins enjoyed by Greencastle and Kildress. In the case of Greencastle they built on the point they took from Eglish last time out while Kildress were finally rewarded for the effort and endeavour they have displayed all season.
Sean Teague’s team have shown themselves to be real battlers and they pushed Carrickmore all the way just a couple of weeks ago and were unlucky not to take something from that game. So it should have come as no real surprise that they got their first win of the season on Saturday. What was slightly surprising was that they did it so convincingly against Errigal Ciaran but it is worth pointing out that this Errigal team does not possess the quality, talent or mental toughness of previous sides. However that should not detract in any way from Greencastle’s achievement and the confidence they will take from this win should help them put together a run of results.
Kildress have been most unfortunate with their results this season and showed against both Ardboe and Carrickmore that they are not that far away. Saturday’s game against Omagh was always one they felt they could win but with the St Endas in good form of late most pundits would have tipped Omagh to win this one. However Gortacladdy can be a tough venue to take points from and the Wolfe Tones produced a spirited second half to come back from three points down to win. Indeed the teams were level late in the game before points from Gavin Treacy and Frank Mc Gurk sealed an well deserved win for the home team.
With these results the bottom five teams in the league find themselves all within touching distance. Another win for any of them and they could begin to pull away from the rest. The matches against each other later in the season suddenly take on a greater sense of importance. Those matches will surely be worth more than just the two points on offer but when all is sorted out at the end of the season each of the bottom five clubs will look back on this weekend as being a decisive set of fixtures and results in determining the success of their 2012 season.
